Discussion Boards
Discussion Boards are similar to Blogs in that they allow multiple students to respond to a given question or comment. They are what we call threaded, in that one in a response is nested under the message to which it is a response. Students can reply to other students posts that are grouped together on the Discussion Board. This takes place in an online environment. First, you must develop the purpose of the Discussion Board. Then the content needs to drive the purpose so that the Discussion Board will be effective and not boring. Second, you need to decide on what information that will help guide the students response to the Discussion Board topic. Next, you need to emphasize the experiential elements in the topic, when possible because students learn from other students stories. Then, You need to determine the type questions that you will ask students. Lastly, all information is put together to actually form the questions.
Blogs
Blogs are online commentary that is used as a information tool. Blogs are teachers personal online journal for their classroom.
Learning Management System (LMS)
LMS is a software application or Web-based technology used to plan, implement, and assess a specific learning process. Typically, a learning management system provides an instructor with a way to create and deliver content, monitor student participation, and assess student performance.
Simulations
Simulations allow students to test practical skills and knowledge remotely when presented in a realistic digital environment. This instructional strategy is used to prepare online students for fieldwork that is traditionally carried out in a face-to-face setting. An example of this is an online biology lesson where students can use simulations for dissection.
Games
Games let online students gain practical experience in an accessible digital environment. The game instructional strategy is used to increase student participation and engagement. Educational technology developers integrate game-building applications into the LMS directly to simplify the design processes.
Case Studies
Case studies promote research, problem-solving, and high-level cognitive skills. This type of instructional strategy uses collaboration and allows students the opportunity to interact with one another to enhance learning. The online instructor suggests reputable online resources that students can consult for information.
Problem-Based Learning
Problem-Based Learning Projects encourage students to practice high-level cognitive and communication skills while actively solving problems. This instructional strategy consists of teams of online students using collaborative document programs like Google Drive to manage their work and share their findings. WebQuest is an online resource that allows instructors to find, create, and share the type of inquiry-based assignments used in PBL projects.
Guided Design
Guided design is another instructional strategy that is used in an online education environment. This is an inquiry-based instructional method that familiarizes students with the resources that are available within their local communities. Students solve open-ended problems in guide design.
Demonstrations
Demonstration is an instructional strategy that teaches by showing students what is expected of them for an assignment or activity in an online course. Demonstrations are the pillars when it comes to the transfer of concepts and processes. The instructional method is enhanced by the virtual learning environment. Online instructors will often upload recorded video demonstrations for the students to view.
Lectures
A lecture is the most common instructional strategy used for higher educational online courses. The online instructor can use lectures to convey information, boost comprehension, and trigger students’ interest.

Webinars are a specialized type of online course session that cater to a particular audience (large number of participants and limited amount of time). You can integrate curriculum by incorporating Webinars into your classes. In preparing for a Webinar it is important to address the following challenges from the start.
- Be A Good Host: To be an effective host or hostess, one must always be prepared for the upcoming webinar. The duties of the host or hostess include welcoming the guests, assessing the mood of the room, making everyone feel a part, expediting the connections and conversations, promoting learning, knowing when to stop, and to leave guests wanting to know more.
- Get Participants Involved From The Start, Ask Your Audience Questions: Ask the participants to introduce themselves in the beginning to ‘Break the Ice’. When giving an opportunity to ask questions, don’t wait until the end. Give this opportunity after each section of the presentation.
- Inflate A Bubble of Concentration: A facilitator needs to be able to inflate an imaginary bubble around themselves at the outset of a live online session and extend it around their computer screen, mouse, and keyboard, to help block out environmental activities that might cause one to lose focus. Facilitator’s may approach this by using the method of inflating a bubble of concentration by asking all the participants of the session to identify some of the potential distractions around them and list them in the text messaging area or onto a whiteboard. Then a facilitator can proceed by inviting all participants to think about how they will minimize or avoid each distraction during the session. This exercise can help to neutralize the distractions at each site by actively assisting each person to be aware of the distractions around them. In turn, this will demonstrate to the participants that the instructor recognizes that each one is an individual with unique surroundings. It is important for the facilitator to build a sense of community between all participants.
